Expecting Things You Don’t Deserve

Then the LORD said, “You are concerned over the plant which cost you no labor and which you did not raise; it came up in one night and in one night it perished…” ~Jonah 4:10
Jonah is mad that God sent him to walk all over town “warning” people to repent because the devastation was coming to town. He wanted this to happen so badly that he decided to build himself a tent outside of town to enjoy the show.
Then, he got mad when the town didn’t burn because the people heard him.
Maybe, Jonah was feeling shame. Maybe, he wanted to “see” evidence validating his actions.
He made God know his anger and demanded a response.
God’s rebuke? (paraphrasing), You are concerned over things that you had no part in creating as if you DESERVE to get your way.
Granted, I have no idea whether that’s the intent of today’s reading but it’s the message I received from it.
God has a nice way to humble the ego.
Have you exhibited Jonah’s attitude before? I have.
I think we call it entitled.
A strong word that many Christian don’t think participate in it. But, it’s my observation that many act like it.
Today’s practice is to sit down and take inventory of the areas in my life where I am concerned over things that I had nothing to do with.
In peace,
~Juan
