The Power of Borrowed Belief
“and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.” ~ Jn 1:36-37
Today’s Gospel, highlighted for me a theme often overlooked in discussions about prophets, Jesus, and discipleship. It revolves around the notion of borrowing belief and trust from one leadership figure to another.
In the Gospel of John (1:35-42), we witness John the Baptist pointing to Jesus as the Lamb of God. John’s trusting disciples immediately followed Jesus. The significance deepens as Andrew, one of the two disciples, brings his brother Simon (Peter) to Jesus, initiating a transformational journey we know of today.
Key Observations:
- Trust in Action: John the Baptist’s simple directive set a powerful chain reaction in motion. The disciples trusted him, and that trust propelled them to follow Jesus.
- Andrew’s Role: Andrew’s played a crucial part in the narrative of Peter, a central figure of Catholicism.
- The Lesson: Often, I feel pressured to create an immediate impact with my words or actions. Today’s gospel, suggests that Instead of aiming for significant change, I can aim to be a simple stepping stone in someone’s journey to God.
Maybe, just for today, we can look for a tiny opportunity to help someone get closer to God.
