Surrendering Challenge: Allowing the Holy Spirit to Guide Your Day

When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. ~ Mt 10:19

Raise your hand if the first thing you do when you are called to do anything of importance in your life is to involve the holy spirit to speak on your behalf.

This type of approach is not natural to me. Anyone who has interacted with me for an extended time knows that I am constantly thinking and exploring what ifs scenarios in everything I do.

  • What’s the objective?
  • Who needs to be involved?
  • What challenges do we face?
  • What are they gaps?
  • What are potential surprises?
  • What’s the worse case scenario?

I do this without even thinking. Before someone finishes stating the problem, I have already thought of, at least, 3 scenarios and came up with potential solutions.

Interestingly, there’s only one space in which my mind sets aside the thinking and let’s God do the talking: life coaching.

When I enter the space of speaking from soul to soul, whether that’s one-on-one or in a small group, I am able to simply relax and response to whatever happens without much thinking or planning. It’s like a switch is flipped and peace takes over.

There have been moments that I would say things and people would ask me to repeat it, and I have to tell them, I don’t remember. Someone else was doing the talking.

Now, you may argue that having a coaching conversation with someone is nothing compared to being in front of the firing squad and having one chance to plea your case for mercy.

My assumption is that if I have evidence that it happens in one area of my life, it can happen in others. So, why not try it every time?

But, most importantly, Jesus didn’t say you will be given at that moment what you are to say so you can win your case.

I see Jesus’ words as another encouragement to surrender and trust that He is in control.

I wonder what would my day look like if I choose to let the Holy Spirit direct everything I say and do. Shall we try it just for today?

In peace,

~Juan
